Not the Classic Lamine

El Barça pierde el Clásico con un final con mucha tensión

Barcelona fell short in the Clásico, with a tense finish capping off a frustrating night at the Bernabéu.

Some players are built for these high-stakes encounters. They not only handle the pressure and responsibility but thrive when the heat is on against the eternal rival. Lamine Yamal has proven time and again he belongs to that category. Yet this time, the young star set the stage for himself with bold statements and social media posts ahead of Barça’s visit to Madrid.

The prodigy from Rocafonda was eager to turn the Bernabéu into his personal playground once more. Madrid fans, however, were waiting with equal fervor. When the stadium announcer read out his name in the starting lineup, a thunderous whistle echoed through the stands. Lamine’s response? A calm smile as he stepped onto the pitch.

As the great Andrés Montes once said, all great players smile the same way.

But Lamine’s intent to shine didn’t translate into a dominant performance on the field. He started with a solid defensive intervention against Vinícius—initially called a penalty by referee Soto Grado, but correctly overturned by VAR. He followed up with a long-range shot that went wide. Beyond those two moments, he had little influence in the first half, unable to create space or find comfort on the pitch.

After the break, he became more involved. With Barcelona trailing, he knew his team needed a spark. He searched his bag of tricks for something to turn the tide—outside-foot passes, driving runs, shots from distance, crosses to the far post. Yet, the young talent lacked the sharpness and touch required to finish his moves as he usually does. Madrid’s defense, especially Álvaro Carreras who stuck to him relentlessly, gave him no breathing room. When he did find space to inflict damage, he couldn’t capitalize.

Lamine Yamal entered the Clásico aiming to make a statement but ended up overwhelmed by the very expectations he helped create. Accustomed to delivering in big games, this time he fell short of his best. And yet, in the 89th minute, he set up Koundé perfectly at the edge of the six-yard box to level the score.

That’s the magic of geniuses—they too need lessons like this to keep growing. Especially for a player just 18 years old, with a whole career ahead to continue tormenting Madrid fans as he has before.
