Sugar Kun to Carry 58kg in Comeback After Nearly Two-Year Layoff, Reuniting with Yutaka Take in Niigata Daishoten

The Niigata Daishoten (G3, turf 2000m), a handicap race, will take place this Saturday, May 16, drawing attention to the return of a well-bred horse.

Sugar Kun (5-year-old colt, training by K. Shimizu) is set to make his first start since finishing seventh in the 2024 Derby, after a long layoff due to tendinitis. His performance could be surprisingly strong right off the bat.

On Sunday, May 10, the horse, ridden by jockey Yoshimura (though Yutaka Take will be in the saddle for the race), clocked a sharp time of 49.8 seconds for the final 4 furlongs with a 12.0-second finish on the Ritto training hill, all while being eased up. Despite nearly two years away from the track, he has been turning in consistent, fast workouts during this training period, showing no signs of rust.

“He’s been moving exceptionally well on the hill recently. His body has filled out, and he’s really starting to show his ability. The 2000-meter distance at Niigata should suit his running style,” said assistant trainer Miyamoto, expressing confidence as they prepare for the race.

The notable handicap weight for Sugar Kun has been set at 58kg. The top weight goes to Sturve (7-year-old gelding, trained by H. Hori) with 59kg, while Doradores (7-year-old horse, trained by T. Miyata) also carries 58kg. As a half-brother to the legendary Kitasan Black, the return of this well-bred horse on Saturday will be one to watch.
