JJ Redick: Lakers Are Hungry for a Championship, But Not Good Enough Yet

The Los Angeles Lakers have now gone six consecutive seasons without an NBA title and haven’t reached the Western Conference Finals in two years. Head coach JJ Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka both agree that winning a championship is the top priority, but they acknowledge the team currently lacks the necessary strength.

In an interview with The Athletic following the Lakers’ playoff exit, Redick made his championship ambitions clear. “I believe in continuity, but if you want to win a championship with this organization—look, I want to win, Pelinka wants to win, Jeanie Buss wants to win, and Mark Walter wants to win. We’re all trying to win a title. But you have to be realistic about where you stand. We’re not good enough right now.”

The Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, and their series against the Houston Rockets exposed multiple weaknesses. The team faces several pressing issues: ensuring Luka Dončić stays healthy, securing LeBron James’ contract extension, re-signing Austin Reaves, and adjusting their tactics to compete with Western Conference powerhouses like the San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Thunder.

The Lakers are still chasing their 18th championship, which would tie the Boston Celtics’ record. However, the front office has yet to provide a clear timeline for reaching that goal.
