Formula 1 is evaluating the introduction of a colored rear light system for the Canadian Grand Prix, according to a Spanish motorsport outlet. The proposal aims to enhance safety by alerting following drivers about the energy levels of the car ahead.

Safety remains a key topic in discussions surrounding the 2026 Formula 1 regulations. Initial changes were implemented ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, affecting qualifying and race procedures. Now, further measures for this season are under review.

According to SoyMotor, the governing body is considering a system that uses purple, blue, and yellow lights on the rear of cars. These lights would activate when the hybrid system is not delivering full power. Each color would represent a different energy level, from a lower charge compared to the previous lap to instances of “superclipping,” a condition that already raised concerns during the Japanese Grand Prix.

Currently, F1 cars only use red rear lights for specific situations, such as rain, pit lane entry, or mechanical issues. During pre-season testing, Aston Martin experimented with blue lights to indicate a limited engine output, but the new proposal would be more comprehensive.

The idea remains a proposal that requires approval. However, the Spanish outlet reports that the system has positive feedback from drivers and could be introduced as early as the next round, the Canadian Grand Prix, in ten days.
