The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) has suspended and fined four players who currently or previously played for CSM Olimpia Satu Mare following a betting investigation. The club itself has been relegated to Liga 3 this weekend.
While the FRF did not release extensive details about the case, it publicly announced the decisions taken by its Disciplinary and Ethics Commission. Marius Hosu, Alexandru Sabău, Alin Văsălie, and Mihai Cătălin Oanea have each been handed a two-month suspension and a fine of 10,000 lei.
The inquiry, which was opened several months ago, stemmed from the FRF’s analysis of several wagers deemed illegal. The commission has now decided to penalize the four footballers.
“Under art. 60 bis lit. b in conjunction with art. 60.1 point two of the FRF’s Disciplinary Regulations, the defendant is sanctioned with a two-month suspension and a sporting fine of 10,000 lei,” the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission stated.
Who are the sanctioned players?
Marius Hosu, a 33-year-old forward, joined CSM Olimpia Satu Mare in 2024. Over his career, he has also played for Luceafărul Oradea, Șoimii Pâncota, CS Oșorhei, Armătura Zalău, Crișul Chișineu, CAO 1910 Oradea, Nibbiano (Italy), and FC Bihor. In the current Liga 2 season, Hosu has scored five goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances.
Alexandru Sabău, 27, plays as a central defender. He was registered with the Satu Mare club from last summer until February 2026. Prior to his time at CSM Olimpia Satu Mare, he played for OltrepoVoghera, Teuz Cermei, Brașov-SR, Petrolul Ploiești, Steaua București, CSM Reșița, Chindia Târgoviște, and SCM Zalău. He has made 11 appearances for the Satu Mare side.
Alin Văsălie, a 24-year-old winger, remains under contract with CSM Olimpia Satu Mare. He previously played for Olimpia Satu Mare, Comuna Recea, Minaur Baia Mare, CS Mioveni, and “U” Cluj. In the 2025/2026 season, he has scored three goals in 24 matches.
Mihai Cătălin Oanea, 27, is the team captain and one of the squad’s most important players. The left-back has been with CSM Olimpia Satu Mare since 2023, after stints at Sportul Snagov, Rapid, Concordia Chiajna, and SSU Poli Timișoara. This season, Oanea has accumulated 27 appearances, two
